Sri Lanka: Pope Francis pleads for unity and national reconciliation

Pope Francis continues his trip to Sri Lanka on Wednesday. A visit dedicated to inter-religious dialogue

“Religious beliefs must not be allowed to be abused for the cause of violence and war. “

During his first day, this Tuesday, in Colombo, the Sovereign Pontiff has already mentioned reconciliation and unity several times.

Sri Lanka was the scene of a civil war between 1983 and 2009 between the Sinhalese Buddhist majority, and the rebels of the Tamil minority, of Hindu religion.

Tensions remain high between the communities. As proof, the meeting organized this Tuesday around the Pope. Witnesses speak of an icy atmosphere between representatives of different faiths.

In his address, the Pope emphasized that “for too many years the men and women of this country (had) been victims of civil war and violence”. “For the sake of peace,” he added, “religious beliefs must not be allowed to be abused for the sake of violence and war.”

Earlier today, François paid a courtesy visit to the President of the Republic, Maithripala Sirisena. This former minister was elected a few days ago at the head of the country. He defeated the outgoing president, Mahinda Rajapakse, however favorite ( more info here ). Here again, the Pope pleaded for national unity and reconciliation.
