One million faithful for the canonization of the first Sri Lankan saint

On the second day of his visit to Sri Lanka, Pope Francoise visited the waterfront in Colombo, the country’s capital.

The Bishop of Rome crossed the famous city promenade in his popemobile and sparked the jubilation of the faithful who had been waiting for him for hours.

About a million worshipers had gathered to attend the canonization mass of the first Sri Lankan saint. It is about a 17th century Indian missionary named Joseph Vaz who came to Sri Lanka to defend the Catholics who are victims of persecution.

The pope must continue his trip to Asia with a stopover in the Philippines where he will go in particular to the south-east of Manila, where Typhoon Haiyan killed nearly 8,000 people in 2013.
