Bloody ending of 37 years of armed conflict in Sri Lanka

This day will be remembered by Sri Lankans as the very last battle against the Tamil rebellion. Unspeakable outburst of violence which can still be read on the faces of the soldiers.

The most die-hard Tamil Tigers fiercely defended their last square of territory on the island’s northeast coast, sometimes blowing themselves up like suicide bombers.

“This battle ended bitterly,” admitted a leader of the Tamil rebels. The latter ended up admitting their capitulation by ceasing the fight.

The Tigers may even have lost their historic leader. In a bunker where he could have taken refuge, bodies were found. One of them could be that of Velupillai Prabhakaran but no source confirms it.

The mystery is for the moment preserved. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa cut short a trip to the Middle East to return to Colombo, and celebrate what is very good news for him. He declared all-out war against the Tamil rebels three years ago. Some Sri Lankans also expressed their joy, after 37 years of waiting… waiting for this conflict to end.
